ABOUT THE GAME

Geode Breaker is a VR simulator where you take the role of a prospector trying to find geodes in rocks. Buy rocks, break them open and find the treasures within. Make the ultimate collection, sell unwanted geodes, upgrade your tools and pimp out your cabin.

Geode Breaker was created for the Virtual and Extended realities subject during year two of the Game Design and Production course.

NOTES

This was my first attempt at designing a VR experience. I was the sole designer on the project, and designed and balanced all gameplay mechanics, music and economies for the project while managing production and scope. It was a great experience, bringing challenges that are exclusive to a VR platform not experienced in other projects.

GAMEPLAY MECHANICS

  • VR experience with teleportation based movement

  • Clean and open rocks to find geodes inside

  • Two tools available for use in game, brush for cleaning and rock hammer for breaking

  • Option to get free basic geode rocks or buy random geode rocks

  • Display found geodes on collection wall

  • Saved world state between sessions including collection wall, cosmetic items and uncut geodes in level

  • In game computer with analysis tray to display geode value

  • Sell geodes if not wanted for collection

  • Value system based off geode weight, type and colour

  • Economy system with randomised value changes every few minutes of gameplay

  • Upgrade tools with in game currency

  • In game store to spend currency on cosmetic items

  • Additional VR fun elements such as grabbing and throwing items in the world

  • Outdoor areas for collecting geodes

  • Areas locked behind purchases of tools with in game currency

  • Personal inventory system

  • Additional tools available for purchase to refine cut geodes to increase value, or open them more efficiently

  • Additional functionality for computer to pre-analyse rocks for geode content

  • Multiple sizes based on weight

  • More complicated value system based off skill with some random elements

  • Commissions for specific geode requirements

  • More dynamic economy system
